Jim Heal and Dr Hendrick talk about some key ideas from their book How Teaching Happens, particularly focusing on teaching paradoxes. Dr Hendrick emphasises how it’s not enough to know your subject; you must know it in several ways. Jim discusses teacher-led instruction vs student-led learning and the importance of using existing knowledge to influence new information. He notes the ways that teachers can present information in ways that are meaningful, significant, and relevant to learning outcomes. These include the way teachers ask questions, how they can make the structure of thinking explicit, providing overviews of key content, rule patterns and the interconnectedness of ideas.

Jim Heal works at Deans for Impact after being Director of Practice at Harvard’s Research Schools International Initiative. He has spent over a decade in schools as an English teacher, Principal, and Specialist Leader in Education. He holds a Master’s in School Leadership and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Harvard University, and is co-author of
How Teaching Happens.

Carl Hendrick

Co-author of How Learning Happens and How Teaching Happens

Dr Carl Hendrick is co-author of How Learning Happens and How Teaching Happens. He holds a PhD in education from King’s College London and has taught for several years in both state and independent sectors. He currently teaches at Wellington College, where he has held roles including Head of English, Head of Learning and Research, and co-director of the Telegraph Festival of Education.
